How To Check Connected Devices On Iphone Hotspot

Want to use the internet on a laptop computer or tablet but don't have a connection? You can share your phone's cellular data connection with multiple devices by turning your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Note: Your cellular plan must support data sharing. If you don't know, contact your carrier.

Wi-Fi hotspot: Set up

  1. Check that cellular data is on. If cellular data is off, your phone doesn't have an internet connection to share.
  2. Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot & Tethering > Mobile Hotspot settings
  3. Touch Setup Mobile Hotspot and do any:
    • To make it easier to identify your hotspot when connecting to it, change the network name for your hotspot.
    • To prevent others from seeing your phone's network name, check Hide my device.
    • To see the current password, check Show password.
    • If the hotspot signal is experiencing interference, change the broadcast channel/band to 5GHz. If the hotspot signal seems weak, change it to 2GHz. (This feature is not available in all areas.)
  4. Touch Save
  5. To limit the number of devices that can connect or to restrict access to only devices you specify, touch Manage devices.
  6. To save power you can configure when the hotspot should automatically turn off if nobody is using it. Touch Timeout settings.

Wi-Fi hotspot: Connect devices

  1. Check that cellular data is on. If cellular data is off, your phone doesn't have an internet connection to share.
  2. Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot & Tethering > Mobile Hotspot settings
  3. Turn Mobile Hotspot onImageand plug in your phone to charge. Using the hotspot really drains the battery!

You'll seeImagein the status bar, indicating that your hotspot is active.

  4. To connect a device, open the device's Wi-Fi settings, select your phone's hotspot and enter the hotspot password.

To disconnect devices from your hotspot, turn off Mobile Hotspot. When you turn it back on, devices with the password can connect automatically. To prevent this, change the Wi-Fi password.

Wi-Fi hotspot: Control connections

If you're experiencing performance issues, you can limit the number of connections allowed or temporarily disconnect devices.

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot & Tethering
  2. Touch Mobile Hotspot settings > Manage devices
  3. Do any of the following:
    • To limit number of devices allowed, touch Device limit
    • To temporarily disconnect devices until your next hotspot session, under Connected devices, touch the device's name > Disconnect. The device will remain unable to connect until you turn off and restart the hotspot.

To allow only specified devices to connect:

  1. Get the MAC addresses of the devices you want to allow to connect. (Connect devices to the hotspot normally, then go to Manage devices, and touch the name of each connected device to view its MAC address.)
  2. Touch Manage allowed devices > Add allowed device
  3. For each device, enter the MAC address and device name.
  4. Once you add allowed devices, they are saved unless you delete them, and you can turn this feature on and off by checking or unchecking Allow all devices any time.

To restrict access for a previously allowed device, touch the device name, then touch Delete.

Wi-Fi hotspot: Change password

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile Hotspot & Tethering > Mobile Hotspot settings
  2. Touch Setup Mobile Hotspot
  3. To see the current password, check Show password. To change the password, type over the current password.

Note: Although you can turn off passwords for your hotspot, keeping a password prevents unauthorized usage of your cellular data.

Troubleshooting tips

Cannot access certain web sites using computer browser

If you're unable to connect to certain sites, try power cycling your device.

If that doesn't work try using a different browser such as Firefox, Internet Explorer or Chrome. Ensure the browser version is up to date.

Unable to establish connection with the phone

  • The wireless network may not be in range or has too weak of a signal to provide a successful connection. Check the signal bar to ensure you have strong connection.
  • Re-enter the key on the device to match the key configured on your phone. Make sure that the encryption type and security settings match on the device and your phone.
  • If WPA2 PSK encryption is in use, check that the key configured on the device matches the key entered on the phone.
  • "Forget" the connection. This will clear the connection and allow you to reinitialize with the your phone.
  • Turn off the connection from your device, turn the phone connection off. Turn back on your device first, then wait for 1 minute and then turn on and enable your hotspot to your phone.
