Maximum Batch Size with a x Gallon Mash Tun?
Maximum Batch Size with a 10 Gallon Brew Tun?
I am looking at stepping up my batch sizes from five to ten gallons and am because buying a new mash tun. However, when I've looked at other forums, I've seen several people that say they tin can still practice 10 gallon batches with a ten gallon mash tun as long equally the grain bill doesn't exceed 30 pounds, but this seems a bit suspicious to me. Does anyone take feel with this or take any advice? Thanks in accelerate.

Mash Tun vs gravity and batch size
A 10 gallon tun can support 24 pounds of grain at 1.25 quarts per pound. Assuming seventy% efficiency, that tops out at 1.060 for a 10g batch.

Wow, that chart is smashing. Thanks!

Yous tin brew 10 gallon batches with reasonable gravity, and merely keep your big beers at 5 gallon batches.

Perfect. Thank you for the info. I was hoping this was the example. It's always so expensive when you start scaling up.

25 lbs really pushes the limits of a 10g brew tun. For a happy life have a mash tun twice the size of intended batch size. You will not be making 10 gallons of RIS in a 10 gallon mash tun unless you brew twice or apply extract to heave.

Realistically, I'd like to upgrade to keggles, but I don't have the cash or time to practise it right now. That'due south why I'g trying to eek past with the current set-up.

The most I would probably expect to get a decent conversion efficiency with would exist 25 lbs with a thickness just under 1.25 qt/lb. Anymore and you're going to take a hard fourth dimension getting anything near a reasonable efficiency.

Or even be able to stir, for that matter.

That calculator is much amend than the 1 that I've been using. Thanks!

My 10 gallon mash tun maxes out at about 25lbs of grain with a ratio of one/i.35 lb/qt. if you bumped it down to 1/ane you might get 30lbs of grain. I regularly brand ten gallon carve up batches at 5.5% abv or less with no problems or loss of efficiency.

ane utilise a 10 gallon lowes cooler for 10 gallon batches and wish I bought the Home Depot cooler with the screw on lid. The printing in lid will not become on when filled to the skirt. I had to turn the chapeau upside downwards and put some weight on it. http://imgur.com/vRVcYLW

Yeah, I had the same problem, unfortunately

Do yourself a favor and get one of those 70 qt Coleman Extreme coolers and a Rectangular Brew Bag. It'll be about the same toll as a 10 gal cooler setup and yous'll exist able to go style upward or down in gravities/sizes and y'all won't accept to limit yourself to i.25 qt/lb.
I believe this is the verbal setup that /u/brulosopher uses.
